Rio

Concentrated state of the art

Performance details

Application(s). Time-coherent 2-way speakers sounding best on stands.

Room size. Small to medium, 100-500sf (10-50 sq. m).

Power. 1Watt peak is too loud for conversation at ten feet (3m) on all models, except original Rio at 4W; All models max 120W peak (amplifier's 8-Ohm output) on dynamic recordings; 80W peak on compressed rock recordings.

Response. In-room, flat +/- 1.5dB 50Hz to 20kHz; Useful response to below 45Hz.

Distortion. <0.5% harmonic 100Hz-24kHz, <1% intermodulation, both at 98dB at 1m (I.M.D. is for any two frequencies separated by a 10:1 ratio).

Phase shift. +/- two degrees from 50Hz to 12kHz, acoustically for all models, except original Rio +/- two degrees from 300Hz to 12kHz. Does not vary with loudness.

Time Delays. At high frequencies <10µs, at low frequencies <100µs for all models except original Rio at high frequencies <50µs, ar low frequencies <5ms.

Rise time. <10 microseconds, positive or negative input. Does not vary with loudness.

Polarity. Positive, over full bandwidth.

Dispersion. Omni at 47Hz, smoothly decreasing to cardioid at 12kHz.

Impedance. 4.1 to 7.3 Ohms 100Hz to 20kHz. Treat as a 4 Ohm speaker. Impedance does not vary with loudness. (See Impedance Chart in the Rio Gallery.)

Sensitivity. 91dB for 2.83V at 1m, at sea level, all models. However, models with XTC™ sound 95dB efficient on music, because it maximizes musical peaks. All models are Dynamically Linear within 0.5dB to above 100dB.

Max SPL. From dynamic recordings: 108dB peak. From compressed rock recordings: 103dB peak; stereo pair. first-arrival sound (without room gain/room reverb), ten feet (3m) away.

Pair matching. Amplitude +/- 0.25dB and Impedance +/- 0.15 Ohms, from 100Hz to 10kHz; All crossover parts within +/- .15%.

Physical details

Cabinet finish. Clad in black Texture-Kote™ with the look and feel of pin-grain leather.

Enclosure material. Proprietary Q-Stone™ cast marble.

Speaker Conditioning. Upon request, we will gladly break-in the speakers' drivers before shipment, at no additional charge.

Grilles. Speakers have their tone balance set for their foam grilles to be left in place.

Size. 15.5"H; 8.2"W max; 13.75"D max, with grille. For speaker stands, base of cabinet measures 6"W; 12.3"D.

Weight. 42lbs. (19kg) each.

Technical specifications

Woofer construction. 6" (17cm) driver; single-pressed paper/carbon fiber cone with ultra-linear suspension, vented under-hung 2-layer, 1" (25mm) voice coil wound on Kapton former. Mechanically damped chassis, epoxy reinforced. Self shielding, radially-magnetized neodymium-iron-boron magnet structure with heat dissipating black coating; 0.32" (8mm) p-p linear excursion; 9.85g moving mass.

Rio-tweeter

Woofer cabinet. Woofer mounted in Q-Stone™ cabinet. 4th-order Butterworth ported with nearly zero box loss.

Woofer / Bass port. Large, 2" (50mm) diameter aerodynamic port tuned to 54Hz on front. The intake opening is positioned to most efficiently transmit bass pressures from inside the enclosure.

Tweeter construction (left). 1.14" (29mm) diameter impregnated fabric dome with treated high-compliance, wide-roll fabric suspension. Ferrofluid-cooled aluminum voice coil with highly flexible, braided-silver lead-in wires. Only 0.35g moving mass, same as the lightest metal domes. Surrounded with wool felt to absorb reflections and prevent diffraction, and to cut off tweeter-output directly to the sides, and directly up and down.

Wiring in Rio, Rio II, Rio III, Chroma and Chroma II Woofer: 14-gauge, heavily silver-plated and polished, oxygen-free pure copper strands, Teflon insulated. Made for us by Audio Magic. Tweeter: 22-gauge fine-stranded pure oxygen-free copper, cryogenically treated, polyethylene insulated. Made by Jena Labs. Both replaced by Marigo Audio's Litz wire in Rio-X, Chroma HX and Chromatose™.

Crossover. Balanced-Phase™ first-order circuit in all models. XTC™ design in all models except orginal Rio.

Zobel circuit capacitor.
In all Rio models, the Zobel capacitors of both woofer and tweeter are of Premium quality. In all Chroma and Chromatose™ models, those are of Ultra-premium quality, as in Eos HD and HX, and our three-way speakers.

Crossover principal capacitor.
Woofer: N/A. Tweeter: Ultra-premium quality in all Rio, Chroma and Chromatose™.

Crossover bypass capacitor.
Woofer: N/A. Tweeter: N/A.

Binding posts. Made by Vampire Wire of high-purity brass, directly plated with gold, for all Rio models. In all Chroma models, we use their pure-OFC version. Requires an 11mm or a 7/16" nut driver to tighten.
